About WALL-E

  • Second PIXAR film to be helmed by director Andrew Stanton, who directed Finding Nemo.
  • WALL-E’s voice is voiced by Ben Burtt, who was a major player in the movie sound business. His resume includes all the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films.
  • John Ratzenberger, who has served as a voice in all PIXAR films, lends his hand again.
  • Sigourney Weaver plays the voice of the computer.
  • Box office receipts closed at about $223,749,872.
  • Plot

In the distant future, the Earth has become so polluted that there is no place to put all the garbage. Fortunately, Buy and Large, a giant mega corporation that runs the Earth, has created giant spaceships that allow humanity to leave the Earth behind while robots clean it up. WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class) is the last of these robots, and finds treasure in the trash. WALL-E’s day is pretty routine until a lovely white robot named EVE arrives, who is very interested in a weed that WALL-E has uncovered. From here begins an adventure beyond the stars where WALL-E discovers that his weed could start a new beginning for the human race.

    My take

  • So far, PIXAR has never had a complete bomb. I was worried that WALL-E would be that film, because I heard that there was almost no dialogue. For the first third of the film, hardly a word is spoken, but the filmmaking uses the technique of “show” rather than “tell” to show what happened to the human race. This works for, not against, the film.
  • Despite the cartoonish look of the people in the film, 3-D computer animation is state-of-the-art.
  • WALL-E is a great science-fiction film that can also work as an animated film for children. My children could not understand the “bigger picture” of this film, but anyone from any age can understand the love story between two robots.
